Bejo introduces Genius (Bejo 3408), a high-yielding white asparagus variety designed for the mid-early segment. After over a decade of development and large-scale trials in the Netherlands, Germany, and France, Genius is now commercially available for the 2025 season.

What sets Genius apart is its exceptional yield, producing more spears per plant in the preferable grading compared to the current standard. This results in a higher pack-out, which is crucial for growers aiming for optimal returns. The variety produces smooth, thick, and very white spears with a well-closed head, ensuring top market quality.

Another key advantage of Genius is its robust plant structure, which makes it strong against foliar diseases, rust, and hollow stems. Its strong and healthy foliage supports sustained productivity over the years. With an optimized planting density growers can maximize their yields while maintaining excellent spear quality.

Bejo has been expanding its asparagus portfolio over the last 15 years, moving from an assortment focused on different harvesting periods to a more in-depth selection within each segment. Genius joins Cygnus in the mid-early category.

During recent events, Genius caught the attention of many growers and experts, who recognized its potential. "Previous trials have shown excellent yields and qualities," said Bejo’s Head of Crop, Gerhard Völkel. "The variety has a nice closed head structure, is resistant to and has proven over years it‘s strength against foliar diseases. We are confident that Genius will set a new quality standard for white asparagus cultivation in north-western Europe."

With its strong agronomic characteristics, high yield potential, and excellent market quality, Genius is a valuable addition for growers looking to optimize their asparagus production.
