On Thursday July 4th, the 10th international Quality inside onion set day took place in Neukirchen-Vluyn, Germany. It was organised by the Quality inside team in cooperation with Bejo Germany. Knowledge sharing on the onion set market was the main focus.
The day started with a symposium with several speakers. Ron Spaans, Sales Manager Broer B.V., discussed new developments at Broer B.V. and opportunities and challenges in onion set cultivation. Jan Hoogland, researcher Phytopathology & Content analysis Bejo, took the visitors through aspects such as research on onions and pests and diseases, among others. Michel Eising, Bejo Germany representative, gave an overview of the German (onion set) market, including opportunities and challenges. Finally, Julien Jeurissen of Wilhelm Weuthen GmbH & Co. KG took visitors through the activities of the company that has also been producing and trading onions for a number of years. Afterwards, visitors from as many as 15 European countries visited an onion set trial field.
Siem Beers, General Director Broer B.V., highlighted the 20th anniversary of the Quality inside onion sets brand. In that time, QI has become a household name in the market, where quality is key. At the trial field, a large part of the QI onion set assortment was shown, from yellow to red and white. One of the latest developments in onion sets is the Tarmo variety, strong in the mid-late segment. A robust type that does well in stressful growing conditions, partly due to its very good root system. In addition, Tarmo is suitable for long storage. Attention was also paid to the B-Mox® treatment for onion sets.
To complete the day, a number of mechanisation companies presented themselves and demonstrations were given.
All in all, it was a successful day where the latest innovations in onion sets were discussed!
